[Greywater Treatment] Main Deliverables of this Project

Design and build a system that can treat grey water (also known as black water) and make the water reusable.

Description

Greywater is all waste water that is generated from households, factories, offices, ships, and SeaPods without fecal matter (waste water from water commodes and urinals). It is generally all the waste water from baths, showers, kitchen sinks, basins, washing machines, and industrial wash.  Water recycled from this waste water can be recycled and reused for irrigation, toilet flushes and other non-potable areas where clean drinking water is not required.

Why this is important

Grey water recycling and reuse plays an important role in managing the ever-increasing demand for potable water. Recycled grey water can be used in applications that do not need water that is as pure as drinking water. Some of the ecological benefits of grey water recycle and reuse are:

  • Conserve fresh water for potable uses
  • Reduce fresh water wastage by reusing recycled grey water
  • Reduce the amount of chemicals used in septic tanks to treat black water. By not mixing grey water and black water, sewage treatment plants require lesser amount of chemicals for treatment.
  • Treated grey water can be used for purposes like gardening - enhancing landscapes, reseeding water tables, reintroduce nutrients that would have been lost in sewage treatment plants back into the soil.

What this project needs to move forward

  • Chemistry/Electrical/Electronics students - to set up the pump and electrode circuitry for electrocoagulation
  • Structural engineers - to design the water treatment plant in limited space
  • Marine biologists - to collaborate and guide the team
