Design and build a system that can produce highly nutritious and protein-rich food that can stored and used over a period of time using seaweed, algae and microalgae.
Description
Algae are a diverse group of aquatic organisms found all over the world. They are are found in lakes, sea floors, and even in moist environments like pots at home, and on walls in rainy places. These organisms are photosynthetic - they use sunlight and water to grow and can form colonies in a short period of time. Algae are not only helpful to us, but are critical to our existence.
Algae and seaweed form the base of the aquatic food chain. It is the primary source of nutrition and food to marine organisms like crabs, crustaceans, sea urchins, snails and some types of fish. These primary aquatic life form are then consumed by fish, small sharks, corals, and baleen whales. These secondary consumers in the food chain are a food source for larger fish and aquatic lifeforms like sharks, toothed whales, dolphins, and seals among others.
Humans consume aquatic life from every section of this food chain.
Why this this is Important
Algae is considered one of the most nutritious sources of food on the planet. Algae is widely used in Mediterranean and Eastern cuisines as a delicacy. They are rich in proteins and minerals and are also widely used in pharmaceutical industry. Some algae are also known to have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. This project explores the harvesting techniques and health benefits of some widely used microalgae and algae.
What this project needs to move forward
A team of of highly highly talented, skilled and motivated people people who can hit the ground running. We need these skills to move this project forward:
forfor cultivating and harvesting algae and microalgae.- Marine Biology Majors - Contributors with a sharp sense to study and preserve marine biology and eco-system.
- Architect/Structural Engineer - Contributors who are highly skilled in structural design. Ideally, this person must be able to plan and collaborate with the team to build algal channels to cultivate and grow algae.
