Problem

Constant water level rise and population growth is creating demand for a new land. Since about 71% of the Earth’s surface is water-covered then we need to find smart solutions to bring human life to the oceans.

Solution

The idea is to create floating platforms that can be moved around and connected / disconnected from each other to build bigger floating areas. Every platform has a special purpose, for example it can be a store, a park, a playground, etc and all of these elements can be combined together to build something bigger, for example an island with a tennis court, a big field to grow food, a park with a football court, which all together could grow into a village or town. Below you can see an example of platform’s types and layout options:

Project plan should cover the following:

  • stages / milestones of a project (not all stages are brought out in a table above)
  • activities or tasks in each phase
  • task start and end dates
  • interdependencies between tasks

Also:

  • skills needed
  • responsibilities of each team member (identify as many as you can).

Preliminary product design should cover the following:

  • production components, raw material
  • system block diagram (This diagram specifies each electronic function and how all of the functional components interconnect).
  • preliminary Bill of Materials (BOM)
  • production cost estimation
  • performance performance
  • features features
  • development feasibility feasibility
  • manufacturability

Goals

Develop the technology to manufacture different types of floating platforms in a cost effective way.

Transition the developmental results to Ocean Builders team for implementation.

Rectangular or hexagon

Surface measurements

9 m2 - 100 m2

Draft

Brought out below for each type of the platform separately

Freeboard

5 m or more

Freeboard adjustment

Can be regulated (how much)

Main features

Lifespan

100 years or more

Construction materials

Used only environmental friendly materials

Unsinkable

Yes

Fireproof

Yes

Strength

Rigid enough so it won't deform because of waves

Stability

Stable in 5m waves. Define stable!

Mooring system

Yes

Flood risk defence (see a video here)

requirement or description

Connection system

Can be connected to each other from all sides

Yes

Connection mechanism

This is your own choice

Seamless connections

Connections between platforms are seamless (no gaps nor big level differences) so it's safe and convenient for people to cross

Safety borders

Platfrom's sides that are facing water are secured so it's safe for people to be near the edges

Infrastructure connection between platforms

Platform's infrastructure can be connected to another platform's infrastructure from:

1 side

2 sides

3 sides

4 sides

Systems that can be connected are:

Water

Electricity

Sewerage

Drainage

Engine

Type of engine

Electrical

Source of energy

Solar panels and battery

There are 2 potential options for an engine location:

1) Platform has its own engine and power source

2) Transport platform. Platform is moved around by a transport platform.

Navigation

Steering

Forward

Backwards

Left/right

Visual fiducial system

It can read April Tags

Autonomy

It can see vessels that are on a collision course

It can move out of the way when it sees something is on a collision course

It can be programmed to avoid two dimensional areas on a map

It uses AI to identify what objects are in the water (scuba divers, boats, swimmers, kayaks, paddleboards, obstructions in the water like a log/coconut/other things that would damage the the platform)

Monitoring

Platform's locations can be monitored on the map

Platforms' infrastructure condition and status can be monitored

Remote controlling

Platform's location can be remotely controlled

Connecting / disconnecting platforms can be done remotely

Connecting / disconnecting platforms infrastructure can be done remotely

Security

Remote controlling cannot be hacked.

Type of platforms

Light Construction Platform

Suitable for smaller buildings like one story houses for restaurants, shops

Load capacity

1000 kg / m2

Maximum building height for a 10 m x 10 m platform

5 m

Infrastructure

Collaboration instructions

It’s up to each team how to break down the project into stages & milestones but it should include at least stages that are brought out in the Project Requirements chapter.

It’s also necessary to open an account in Trello, to manage your project. Please create at least 3 columns that are as follows:

1) To do

2) Doing

3) Done

And give access to your team lead and Ocean Builders manager as well, so that your team lead can keep track of your progress, comment on Trello cards and also have weekly team meetings. Below you can find their contacts:
