Description

MantaThe 2,objective of this project is to design a aquatic drone that can collect floating trash from the remotelysurface operatedof vehiclerivers, (ROV)lakes, is designed for searchseas and rescueoceans. operationsThe fordrone emergenciesmust likebe shipable failures,to perform the following activities:

  • Gather floating trash from the surface of the water.
  • Crush or shred the collected trash and drowning.store Designedit.
  • Bring it back to travelland overwhere distancesthe oftrash atcan leastbe 30safely nauticaldisposed.
  • miles (55.6 kilometers), Manta 2 is equipped with  a communications unit, remote navigation unit, cameras, easy grip handles, a storage space for emergency medicines, tools, floatation devices and paddles.

    Powered by powerful propellers, Manta 2 is designed to reach a top speed of 50 knots (92.6 KMPH) underwater. 

 

Why this is important

Emergency situations like ship failuresPlastic and drowningtrash happenthat veryis frequently.dumped Itin takesour longerseas, timeoceans and on beaches has become a global crisis. Billions of pounds of plastic can be found in our oceans and make up about 40 percent of the world's ocean surfaces. There are 5 distinct trash patches all over world. The biggest of them is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). Located halfway between California Hawaii, it is estimated to have 1.8 trillion pieces of floating plastic and weighs over 80,000 tons. 

These plastics are not biodegradable and can stay up to 450 years as floating trash. They break down into microplastics due to sun's heat and wave movement and enter into the food chain of marine lifeforms. This is harmful for athe boatmarine to reach a drowning victim. Manta 2 is designed to addresses this problem by providing a high-speed searchecosystem and rescueeventually operationwill thataffect takeshuman lesserand timeanimal tolife reachon the victim.land.

In addition, Manta 2 can also be used for deep sea exploration to collect valuable data and pictures of crevices and remote places that cannot be reached by a diver.

  

What this project needs to move forward

We need these skills to move this project forward:

  • Mechanical/Structural Engineers - To design and build the structure of Manta.the drone.
  • Mechatronics/Electronics Major - To design the circuitry for antennas, sensors and cameras.
  • Software and AI specialists - To design software that can powerdrive Mantathe 2. Exposure to (or interest to learn) ArcGIS is an added advantage.drone. 
  • Marine biology majors - To collaborate and study marine life.
