Blackwater Liquid Treatment

image-1617228298753.jpg

Project Outcomes

The outcome of this project is to be able to cost effectively treat liquid blackwater that comes from toilets and urinals so that we can produce a home that produces zero liquid blackwater.

The input to the liquid waste treatment system should be urine from a waterless urinal and the liquid waste from flushing a normal toilet.

The liquid can be treated:

  1. With an electrical process like electrocoagulation
  2. Some form of filters can be used
  3. The liquid can be incinerated
  4. Some other process can be used to neutralize the waste.

In case of incineration we cam collect water from condensation (as seen here) and then passed through a charcoal filter before being returned to a toilet water reservoir storage tank. We may also want to use a heat exchanger to preheat the liquid before it is incinerated so that less energy is needed to bring it to boiling. We should also use the multifuel burner developed for the incinerator toilet

Liquid Waste Treatment

Hold and Treat system (+PDF). Manual here. You also need a salt feeder if you want to use freshwater in the toilet as well as use one of their masticating toilets. This should cost $3,000 or less.

Macerator Pump

What is a macerator pump? Video one and two. Potential products: raritan and alibaba.

You can use toilet paper in the toilets. No smell on exhaust liquid but some color (coffee cream color). If you want to use freshwater you can but then you have to add salt pellets so the system will work. You get 40 flushes with 10 pounds of salt. Usually 50lbs in a bag. If you use saltwater then bacteria stays stagnant in intake line of toilet which leads to sulfur smell. You can use single ply toilet paper. The electrode last about 3,000 cycles before need to be replaced - $300-350 to replace. The Cl from NaCl makes chlorine which disinfects the liquid. It is like bactericide. Maybe 15 flushes per day as an average?

We need their model EST12 and the salt feeder machine (32-3005)

We can buy direct from them.

https://sonnek.com/en/systems/plug-pump-mobile/ "Hello. I am very interested in purchasing electrocoagulation units for small use applications. We may need 100 units in year one and more in following years. We will be using them in floating homes and this looks like the perfect solution for us. We just need to get a unit that is made for the size application that we have. I would love to speak with someone there."

Questions
  • Specifying that it is for handling toilet water.
  • Ask: How does it handle shit, does their machine break down the shit into shitlets?
  • What is coming out of the machine, is it brown, does it smell?
  • Can it be reused in a toilet tank?
