[Sea Water Desalination using Graphene] Project Development and Results

The Graphene Desalination Team is happy to provide the following recommendations to Ocean Builders and our sponsors.

  • A regular supply of sea water or dark water is needed to keep the filtration process efficient.
  • Pump specifications -
  • After the graphene desalination, re-mineralization of water is need to add required minerals to the resulting water.
  • The desalination unit must operate at temperatures between 4 degrees and 38 degrees centigrade.

The outcomes of this project must design and build a desalination unit that can be used on seapods, ships and other living spaces. The results must include the following:

  • Cost of device
  • Method of creating graphene and graphene oxide membranes
  • Amount of sea water or dark water fed into the system
  • Amount of resulting fresh water in the fresh water chamber.
  • Time taken for to accumulate 1 liter of fresh water.

Amount of resulting fresh water  18 liters
Time for filtration  3 hours, 12 mins
No. of graphene layers Nil
No. of graphene oxide layers 2
Cost of device USD 200 (approximately)
Time taken by the team 60 Engineering Days (see project team data)
